To John’s listeners, the message of the kingdom was music to their ears. To hear that the kingdom was at hand meant a time of peace and prosperity was coming; a time of joy and laughter, and everything good associated with it. To the average Jew, it was like telling a four year old to go to bed on Christmas Eve, “cause Santa will be here in the morning.” It was good news. It was what they’ve been waiting all their lives to hear.

But before he does, God calls out Pharaoh’s sin: You still set yourself against my people and will not let them go.
